Walters' monster game powers Tritons to victory
LYNNWOOD -- Edmonds College women's basketball came out of the gates hot, applying defensive pressure and moving the ball aggressively on offense. At the end of the first stanza, that effort amounted to a 17-0 advantage. The Tritons stayed in control in the second quarter but the Orcas made their own push in the third quarter, outscoring Edmonds 22-5 and getting the game back within reach. With just under nine minutes left in the fourth quarter Kyla Miller's free throws cut the lead to just to two points (40-38). That would be the last points of game for Whatcom, as Edmonds mounted another massive thrust -- they closed the game on a 25-0 run to win going away.
Jada Walters was a force. She tallied 18 points and grabbed a season-high 24 rebounds; her consistent ability to drive to the lane and create space resulted in 14 free throw attempts. Keira Slippern scored 11 points and had 9 rebounds. Dreanna Jackson notched 11 points.
Just two games remain in the regular season. Edmonds (16-7, 10-2) will be at Bellevue (11-16, 7-5) on Sunday, February 25 for a 12 pm noon tipoff. The four postseason entries from the North Region are now locked in. Undefeated Peninsula has clinched the region title. Edmonds leads Shoreline by one game in the standings, but holds the tiebreaker against the Dolphins as they beat them twice this year. The Tritons need just one win to claim the 2-seed. The first round of the NWAC Championship Tournament is at Columbia Basin College in Pasco March 8-10.
Edmonds landed at No. 9 in the most recent NWAC Coaches Poll that was released February 20.
