Win streak hits seven, Tritons clinch playoff berth
LYNNWOOD -- The early going set the tone for Edmonds as swarming defense and a full court press ultimately wore down the Orcas. The Tritons took control in the second half and defeated Whatcom 94-83.
The usual suspects contributed offensively -- Chris Lee (15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Jack Sims (14 points, 5 rebounds), Naser Motley (13 points), Josiah Pierre (12 points), and Trevon Hamilton (11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists). Solomon Barnes also gave an inspired effort, scoring 6 points and adding 9 rebounds. Norman Dupree chipped in 8 points and 5 rebounds.
To sustain the defensive pressure, the entire roster was called on again. All 14 players suited up saw action. The common theme of this team continues to be just that -- it has been a team effort. In the current seven-game winning streak, success on the defensive end of the floor has led to scoring opportunties. One thing that doesn't show up in the box scores is the defensive charges taken, the execution of the indiviudal game plans, and the camaraderie and chemistry of this group.
Wednesday night's triumph over Whatcom clinched a berth to the postseason, and with two games remaining, Edmonds (19-8, 9-3) is the only North team that has punched their ticket. Next up is a rematch with Bellevue (16-11, 5-7) on the road Sunday, February 25. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. A win over the Bulldogs or a Peninsula loss would secure the North Region title.
Skagit Valley, Peninsula, Everett, Whatcom, and Bellevue all remain alive for the final three spots. The first round of the NWAC Championship Tournament is at Columbia Basin College in Pasco March 6-8.
Edmonds moved up to No. 6 in the NWAC Coaches Poll that was released February 20.
